Tune In, Drop Out

Self recently posted this link, “Last Night A Playlist Ruined My Life“, by Jean Barker.
This is something I have known to be true for ages to comes, and it was discussed up to the point of boredom by now, but I need to highlight some of my own parts.

First of all, I am glad Jean wrote it, it’s about as gutsy and accurate as it can get. I am not fond of the “media” in general, they only tell the parts that keep the money flowing, and content vital to the growth and advancement of mankind just won’t do.

About a year ago, some ’survey company’ called me, and told me that they are doing a survey on the likes and dislikes of South Africa’s major radio stations. The very first question was “do you listen to 5FM?”. My reply was simple “no, in fact, i’d rather eat a dead rat”. The lady said that the rest of the survey wasn’t required and hung up. By not supporting or listening to the shitstation of the century, they didn’t even care about the comment I had for the other decent stations in S.A. Wow, one guess only how biased that was, and guess who funded that research…

Another event of note, is for instance the terminations of shows liek Rave Lavine’s “Totally Live”, which used to air in the 90’s. It covered classic rock and metal with interesting bits inbetween. It was terminated because it was a soft target by the typical “rule” today. It was replaced with that which you hear if you tune into 5FM or GoodHope fm, completely boring MTV style trendy crap that is repeated 5000 times per day, the same crap over and over, with racist or prejudice remarks between it to entertain the level of listener who enjoys that drivel.

Reading Jean Barker’s article reminded me how susceptible the idiots around me is, how inept they are at choosing their own likes and dislikes, their own music and own fashion. Without “popularity” cesspools like 5FM and MTV, they would be like turd flies against a window. *thud* *thud* *thud*. And nothing will convince them otherwise.

Gareth Cliff and DJ Fresh, I know their names well because I like to know when I should run or hide, or change the TV Channel (With Gareth Cliff running his own show these days, he probably needs more ground to be an anti afrikaans racist or something). But I stopped caring, and I stopped getting annoyed.

I listen to 567, they say what they feel, and they allow input from listerners without screening out the material that objects to what they do. They are fair and independant, and they have a great classics show on weekends with non-racist and non-prejudice presenters (I call them presenters, out of respect). John Maytham is just awesome, and unbiased, and the rest of them work well for me too. I have my doubts about the morning guy (Aiden), he might be a closet pre-jude too, but that might just be me, so until I can prove it, I will listen to his show too and enjoy it. His laugh is great afterall. Also, the 567 guys are educated, so they know how to setup their own playlists, based on choice and flavour, votes and savour.

That’s all I want to friggin’ rant about.

Goodbye folks :D
